Fascia is a fibrous connective tissue that is arranged as sheets or tubes. One of them is called Superficial fascia lies under the dermis of the skin and is composed of loose, irregular connective tissue. Deep fascia is a dense connective tissue that surrounds muscles, bones nerves and blood vessels.
Fascia maintains structural integrity and assists in stabilisation, provides support and protection and act as a shock absorber.
When fascia dysfunctions and becomes injured it causes inflammation or repetitive stresses leading to abnormal adhesions in the fascia. This will decrease the ability to glide and create limited movement. Adhesions also affect the nerves and create disturbances of coordination and balance.
Fascia responds well to mechanical stimulation, so that we can conduct soft tissue massage, Muscles Energy Technique and joint mobilisation to reduce the adhesion of fascia through several massage treatments.
